This is a story of the Bayou—of passion, danger, and betrayal. It is a tale wrought out of a brutal period in American history, passed down by a family born into slavery. And it is Jazz legend Sidney Bechet’s story.
Born to a Creole shoemaker, New Orleans jazz pioneer Sidney Bechet was soloing on his clarinet in Storyville by the time he was eleven and attained mastery of the soprano saxophone soon thereafter. He spent his acclaimed career touring throughout the world and recording with such legends as Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington.
