Happy Birthday to the compelling and amazing Elly Bangs
A queer trans woman who was raised in a new-age cult, had six wisdom teeth, and once rode her bicycle alone from Seattle to the Panama Canal, Elly Bangs‘ debut novel UNITY (2021) garnered praise from The New York Times, Publishers Weekly, New York Journal of Books and was included among Washington Post Best Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror of 2021 and Aurealis Best Speculative Fiction of 2021. A Clarion West Writers Workshop graduate, her acclaimed short fiction has appeared in Clarkesworld, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Escape Pod, and others.
Living in Seattle with her partner and two cats, Bangs spends her days fixing machines and her nights writing short stories, novellas, and novels—usually speculative fiction, sci-fi, fantasy, and uncategorized weirdness—with a thematic emphasis on longing, heartbreak, and the grim fate of humankind. Her site, ellybangs.com, demonstrates some of Bangs’ unique genius with her “Story Premise Bot” and essays such as A Pocket Guide to Nuclear War Survival & Preparedness.
All of us at Tachyon wish the singular Elly a happy birthday. May the exceptional weirdness continue to flow.
