Happy birthday to the extraordinary, groundbreaking editor Ann VanderMeer
The editor (or co-editor alongside her husband Jeff) of over a dozen anthologies, Ann VanderMeer served as Weird Tales editor-in-chief for five years (2007-2012) and is currently an acquiring editor for Tor.com. Her acclaimed anthologies include the Steampunk trilogy (STEAMPUNK [2008], STEAMPUNK II: STEAMPUNK RELOADED [2010], STEAMPUNK III: STEAMPUNK REVOLUTION [2012]), THE NEW WEIRD (2008), The Thackery T. Lambshead Cabinet of Curiosities (2011), The Weird: A Compendium of Strange and Dark Stories (2011), Sisters of the Revolution: A Feminist Speculative Fiction Anthology (2015), The Bestiary (2015), The Big Book of Science Fiction (2016), Current Futures: A Sci-fi Ocean Anthology (2019), The Big Book of Classic Fantasy (2019), and The Big Book of Modern Fantasy (2020). Her efforts have garnered numerous awards including the Hugo, World Fantasy, British Fantasy, and LOCUS.
VanderMeer co-wrote (with Jeff) THE KOSHER GUIDE TO IMAGINARY ANIMALS (2010). She crafted the short story “Best Kosher Imaginary Animals Recipes” and many of the essays.
She founded the groundbreaking Buzzcity Press, publisher of the magazine The Silver Web, Jeff VanderMeer’s first novel Dradin, In Love, and International Horror Guild Award-winning The Divinity Student by Michael Cisco. With Jeff, VanderMeer started the press Cheeky Frawg which specializes in “quality, self-aware e-books.” Beyond the titles crafted by the duo, they have done the laudable work of publishing fiction from international writers that deserve more attention among English-language readers.
All of us at Tachyon wish the amazing Ann, a fantastically weird birthday.
