Happy birthday to the multi-talented David Sandner, writer, editor, and fan of weird things
Author and editor David Sandner‘s poetry and fiction have appeared in numerous publications including Asimov’s Magazine of Science Fiction, Weird Tales, Realms of Fantasy, Pulphouse, Baseball Fantastic, The Mammoth Book of Dark Magic, The Mammoth Book of Sorcerers’ Tales, and The Mammoth Book of Black Magic. A noted scholar, his book length award-nominated meditations on weird fiction number The Fantastic Sublime (1996), Fantastic Literature: A Critical Reader (2004), Critical Discourses of the Fantastic, 1712-1831 (2011), and Philip K. Dick: Essays of the Here and Now (2020). Sandner’s work of fiction about Mary Shelley’s quest for her husband’s heart, His Unburned Heart premiered in May 2024.
Alongside his frequent collaborator Jacob Weisman, Sandner edited the groundbreaking, comprehensive anthology THE TREASURY OF THE FANTASTIC (2001). The duo have also written several stories together including the acclaimed Mingus Fingers (2019) and Hellhounds. Solo, he edited The Afterlife of Frankenstein: A Century of Mad Science, Automata, and Monsters Inspired by Mary Shelley, 1818-1918 (2023). Sandner co-curated the Zines to the Future! exhibition (October-December 2020) for Cal State Fullerton and maintains The Frankenstein Meme, his ongoing scholarship on the literary influence of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.
