Happy birthday to the amazing Hannu Rajaniemi
The Finnish writer Hannu Rajaniemi holds a B.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of Oulu, a Certificate of Advanced Study in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge, and a Ph.D. in Mathematical Physics from the University of Edinburgh. While in Edinburgh, he joined Writers’ Bloc, a writers’ group whose membership also included Charles Stross.
Rajaniemi’s debut science fiction novel The Quantum Thief (2010) introduced thief Jean le Flambeur and received almost universal praise, winning the Tähtivaeltaja Award for best science fiction book published in Finnish and garnering a John W. Campbell Memorial Award nomination. The following two novels The Fractal Prince (2012) and The Causal Angel (2014) also featured le Flambeur. His first non le Flambeur novel was the Sidewise award-nominee Summerland (2018).
Words Of Birth and Death (2006) and HANNU RAJANIEMI: COLLECTED FICTION (2015; later reprinted as Invisible Planets: Collected Fiction [2016]) compiled much of his short fiction. Rajaniemi donned the editorial mantle with THE NEW VOICES OF SCIENCE FICTION (2019 co-edited with Jacob Weisman).
All of us at Tachyon wish the charming Hannu a happy birthday, full of wonder and amazement.
