DRAGONS, ZOMBIES AND ALIENS praises Ellen Datlow’s NIGHTMARES: A NEW DECADE OF MODERN HORROR.

Anthologies are, by their nature, hit-or-miss, but I can honestly say that most of the stories in here were very good. There was suspense, creeps, and a couple of them even managed to be funny. It made me laugh one minute and squirm in my seat the next, which was undoubtedly very confusing to anyone who happened to be in the room with me at the time.

My favorite top five stories from NIGHTMARES are:

“The Atlas of Hell” by Nathan Ballingrud
“Ambitious Boys Like You” by Richard Kadrey
“Our Turn Too Will One Day Come” by Brian Hodge
“Sob in the Silence” by Gene Wolfe
“Strappado” by Laird Barron

I recommend this book to everyone, even those who, like me, honestly aren’t that interested in horror literature. It’s well worth the read.

On the Portuguese site NOTICIAS DE ZALLAR, Nuno Ferreira enjoys Brandon Sanderson’s Hugo Award winner THE EMPEROR’S SOUL.

Much remained to be seen of the relations that could come between them, even because they are characters that, developed, surely marked more than they already did. Which, for me, was enough.

Forgery is yet another magic system to join Brandon Sanderson’s super-original creations. The author got the idea by observing a technique of carving Chinese stamps in a museum in Taiwan , and it turned out. This novella has one more story full of potential and would like to see, in a brief future, a correlation between the story of THE EMPEROR’S SOUL and that of Elantris, since they occur in the same world.

Rating: 8/10

I’m going to put a general warning that there are some uncomfortable scenes and moments in this, and that it has sexual imagery etc.

I’ve never read it before and I am still not over it. I love it and yet it made me feel wildly uncomfortable and yet its familiar at the same time.

Somehow it captures something about being a woman that I don’t know that I’ve seen before. It’s very cis-focused, and white, though there’s something to it that serves as a critique of that.

I somehow like that I know the ending of the story and yet it still comes as a cruel surprise in a way.

I’d love to hear people’s takes.

oh whoa i remember this. it’s a really fantastic story. the control in the writing i remember thinking was really remarkable–there are a million places where it would be easy to lose control of the narrative/tone/voice/themes but she doesn’t. she holds it all together. excellent stuff.

I think it’s just that the writing immediately feels slightly dangerous and yet familiar. I can tell what you mean by controlled. It’s like no part of it is unnecessary and all of it advances to fold together nicely, which is kind of a rarity in writing.

The pay off is both heartbreaking and also you get this sense of righteous anger that makes you want to share it, so naturally that makes it something I love because ya’ll know I love being angry for righteous reasons heh

At the Polish site LUBIMYCZYTAĆ.PL, Lavie Tidhar’s John W. Campbell Award winner CENTRAL STATION is nominated for the best science fiction book of the year.

“Her Body and Other Parties,” by Carmen Maria Machado, is a love letter to an obstinate genre that won’t be gentrified. It’s a wild thing, this book, covered in sequins and scales, blazing with the influence of fabulists from Angela Carter to Kelly Link and Helen Oyeyemi, and borrowing from science fiction, queer theory and horror.

Published just this week, “Her Body and Other Parties” was released in the wake of its success: It’s been named a finalist for the National Book Award and for the Kirkus Prize, and its publisher, Graywolf, has already gone back for a third printing. Not since Karen Russell’s “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves,” in 2006, has a debut collection of short stories from a relatively unknown author garnered such attention, or deserved it more.

Sehgal gives special attention to “The Husband Stitch,” which also appears in Peter S. Beagle and Jacob Weisman‘s acclaimed anthology THE NEW VOICES OF FANTASY.

The strongest and scariest story here, “The Husband Stitch” — look up the term if you dare — follows a character through marriage, childbirth and childrearing. Running parallel are the gossip and ghost stories she hears about unlucky brides, unlucky pregnant women, women who got in the wrong car, who trusted the wrong doctor, married the wrong man, married the right man. “Stories have this way of running together like raindrops in a pond,” the narrator thinks. “Each is borne from the clouds separate, but once they have come together, there is no way to tell them apart.”

In the old myths, women were fenced in by forests, towers, spells. In Machado’s work, cautionary tales are all that’s required. Fear keeps women in line. Their own minds act in the place of moats.

Fairy tales were meant to inoculate us against dread, or so the theory goes; to offer children controlled exposure to frightening things — to jealousy, to adult sexuality. Terror in doses. Even Angela Carter, who claimed with characteristic relish that her work “cuts like a steel blade at the base of a man’s penis,” wrote some joyous endings. In her telling, Red Riding Hood and the wolf make the loveliest couple.

Machado offers a more complicated solace. She doesn’t contain our terror, she stokes it and teaches us about it.

Blending science fiction, comedy and fantasy, Machado explores violent acts committed against women. These 100 books lists always sound easy in theory, but then when I sit down to write one I discover compiling a list of, say, 100 science fiction debuts that are worth reading is a bit more work than I imagined.

That’s not the case with this post! Indie publishers are amazing and there are sooooo many books out there worth your time. I wrote down the first 100 books that popped into my head that I have actually read and loved, and I bet I could easily do another list of 100 more. (I smell a sequel!)

Husband Stitch

Me:
as a child, high-pitched, forgettable; as a woman, the same.
The
boy who will grow into a man, and be my spouse: robust with his own
good fortune.
My father: like your father, or the man you wish
was your father.
My son: as a small child, gentle, rounded with
the faintest of lisps; as a man, like my husband.
All other
women: interchangeable with my own.)

In
the beginning, I know I want him before he does. This isn’t how
things are done, but this is how I am going to do them. I am at a
neighbor’s party with my parents, and I am seventeen. Though my
father didn’t notice, I drank half a glass of white wine in the
kitchen a few minutes ago, with the neighbor’s teenage daughter.
Everything is soft, like a fresh oil painting.

The
boy is not facing me. I see the muscles of his neck and upper back,
how he fairly strains out of his button-down shirts. I run slick. It
isn’t that I don’t have choices. I am beautiful. I have a pretty
mouth. I have a breast that heaves out of my dresses in a way that
seems innocent and perverse all at the same time. I am a good girl,
from a good family. But he is a little craggy, in that way that men
sometimes are, and I want.

I
once heard a story about a girl who requested something so vile from
her paramour that he told her family and they had her hauled her off
to a sanitarium. I don’t know what deviant pleasure she asked for,
though I desperately wish I did. What magical thing could you want so
badly that they take you away from the known world for wanting it?

Reviews for Peter S. Beagle and Jacob Weisman’s new anthology, THE NEW VOICES OF FANTASY, have started appearing.

INFINITE TEXT praises the anthology.

What Beagle does with this anthology is an elegant passing of the writing pen to a younger generation of fantasy writers, and he presents them to us, the readers, without rigidity as his teachers before him have. He accepts them as they are and is in awe of their risk-taking, creativity, and courage. I cannot imagine how many works Beagle must have read through to select these top 19 stories, but I had a hard time selecting my favourites, as each one of them brings something completely unique to the Fantasy cornucopia. His selection includes a great balance of men and women writers, as well as various backgrounds.

I recommend this anthology to anyone who loves fantasy and wants to try some of the new emerging voices. I have no doubt that each one of these writers will continue to write and publish larger works in the future, and this anthology is a great introduction to them. I would especially recommend this to readers who are new to fantasy and want to sample shorter works without committing to an entire series and/or trilogy.

I really liked, sometimes loved the stories in this volume. A lot of them are reprints, if not all, and I remember a number of them quite fondly from previous reads, such as, and especially, Alyssa Wong and Brooke Bolander.

However, there were a number of newcomers (the definition is flexible) that I really enjoyed or I’ve already had the pleasure of reading some of their actual novels, such as stories from Hannu Rajaniemi, Sofia Samatar, and Max Gladstone. Hannu is a personal favorite author of mine, and Max is rapidly getting there, too, for me.

All in all, though, I am very impressed and pleased by this collection and if its primary intention is to say, “Hey, look at these authors and revel in their glory!”, then I think it did a wonderful job. Most of them have quite a few awards under their wings, too.

I totally recommend this for all modern fantasy lovers. (And btw, there’s a TON of great OLD fantasy retellings, usually quite unique and unusual tales in their own right. If you love hard to find legends retold for modern sensibilities wrapped and layered in fantastic characters, this is ALSO your book.)

THE READING LIFE really likes the book’s lead story “Hungry Daughters of Starving Mothers” by Alyssa Wong.

A few days ago I as kindly given a review copy of a forthcoming soon anthology, THE NEW VOICES OF FANTASY, edited by Peter S. Beagle and Jacob Weisman. I was completely shocked by how much I liked the beautiful lead story, “Hungry Daughters of Starving Mothers” by Alyssa Wong. Last month I first read the surrealistic short fiction of Leonora Carrington. If April 2017 was for me the month I "discovered” Leonora Carrington, then quite possibly May will be observed as the month I first read Alyssa Wong. I know this sounds hyperbolic but I can for sure visualize Leonora being stunned by “Hungry Daughters of Starving Mothers,” i certainly was. I was on first reading mesmerized by the sheer elegance of Wong’s prose combined with the very ugly and evil story she tells.

If just a few of the stories in THE NEW VOICES OF FANTASY are close to this good, it is well worth acquiring.
