The lauded Joe R. Lansdale to be honored with prestigious Raymond Chandler Award

VARIETY is reporting that Joe R. Lansdale will be feted by Italy’s Noir in Festival.

Lansdale, who will receive the fest’s Raymond Chandler Award, is expected to make the trek to the Italian Alps to tubthump his new book “Honky Tonk Samurai,” the latest in a series which is the basis for upcoming six-episode SundanceTV skein “Hap and Leonard.”

“Honky Tonk Samurai” will hit Italian bookstores this month, Italy being the first country where the book is being released, published by Einaudi which is the country’s second-largest imprint.

Previous recipients of the fest’s Raymond Chandler Award, established in tandem with the Raymond Chandler estate, include Elmore Leonard, Scott Turow, and John le Carre.

The unique fest’s lineup of movies and books will be announced on November 18.

The 25th edition of the Courmayeur Noir in Festival will run December 8-13.

Probably the only person in the International Martial Arts Hall of Fame who has received an Edgar, ten Stokers, a Grandmaster
of Horror, the British Fantasy, and the Herodotus Awards, Joe R. Lansdale has written more than 40 novels, four
hundred shorter works, and devised the Shen
Chuan Martial Science.

His novels include the Edgar Award-winning THE BOTTOMS, COLD IN JULY, NIGHTRUNNERS, FLAMING ZEPPELINS, A FINE DARK LINE, THE DRIVE-IN, THE THICKET, FENDER LIZARDS, and PARADISE SKY. Lansdale’s most famous creation is the unlikely duo of Hap and Leonard. Hap Collins is white, liberal, and even tempered. Leonard Pine, who is quick to anger, is black, conservative and gay. In a series of 8 novels, beginning with SAVAGE SEASON, and several novellas, the best friends encounter violence, racism, and adventure in their East Texas haunts. The often humorous tales have garnered much praise and a legion of loyal fans. The 9th novel, HONKY TONK SAMURAI, and a pair of collections, HAP AND LEONARD and HAP AND LEONARD RIDE AGAIN, come out this February. Also in early 2016, the pair comes to SUNDANCE TV with the series HAP AND LEONARD, starring Michael K. Williams, James Purefoy, and Christina Hendricks.

Other works that
have enjoyed the film treatment include BUBBA HO-TEP, COLD IN JULY,
INCIDENT ON AND OFF A MOUNTAIN ROAD, and CHRISTMAS WITH DEAD, which
Lansdale produced with a screenplay by his son, Keith. He has written many screenplays and teleplays, most notable for BATMAN THE ANIMATED
SERIES and SUPERMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES. He wrote the script for the
animated film THE SON OF BATMAN.

I’d read all of Kinsella’s novels, but somehow hadn’t realized that he was also a prolific writer of short stories. Joe R. Lansdale delivers an original tale for the forthcoming HAP AND LEONARD

Written especially for the forthcoming collection HAP AND LEONARD, the Joe R. Lansdale story “Not Our Kind” reveals one of the duo’s earliest interactions.

“You’re
seeing it,” the one I knew best said. His name was David. Last time
I saw him was at the Swinging Bridge, and there had been a fight
there for money. My new friend Leonard was there. He won the fight.
It was a friend of David’s he fought, and he beat the guy’s ass
like a tambourine and made some money.

Actually,
that fight, lit by a huge tire fire, was the first time I met
Leonard, and we hit it off, and we saw each other again in Marvel
Creek, running into one another accidentally at first, and then
finally on purpose. He lived over in LaBorde with his Uncle, but they
came to the general store in Marvel Creek to shop, which I didn’t
understand. Everyone in Marvel Creek goes to the larger city of
LaBorde to shop, but his uncle had a store in Marvel Creek he liked,
place where he had been buying shoes for a long time. He liked it,
Leonard said, because the owner never told him to come around back,
even before laws were passed that said he didn’t have to.

You’ll have to wait until March, 2016 to read the rest of story in HAP AND LEONARD.

The magnificent Christina Hendricks joins the cast of HAP AND LEONARD

According to HOLLYWOOD LIFE, Christina Hendricks in her first major post MAD MEN role will play Hap Collins’ ex-wife Trudy on Sundance TV’s HAP AND LEONARD, the adaptation of Joe R. Lansdale’s acclaimed crime series.

Trudy shows up in the rural south after two years, with a proposition that her ex cannot refuse. Hap and Leonard takes place 1980s East Texas, and will give a look at race, class and friendship of that time.

Christina joins previously announced cast members James, Michael Kenneth Williams (The Wire,”Inherent Vice, 12 Years a Slave, Boardwalk Empire), Bill Sage (Boardwalk Empire, We Are What We Are) and Jimmi Simpson (House of Cards, The Newsroom).

Hap and Leonard follows the story of Hap Collins (Purefoy) and Leonard Pine (Williams). Hap is a white working-class laborer who spent time in federal prison for refusing to be drafted into the military and serve in the Vietnam War. Now in his 40s, he is just barely making ends meet picking roses on an East Texas plantation. His confidante and lifelong best friend is Leonard, an openly gay, black Vietnam vet with anger issues. Having been raised by an uncle who shunned him after learning he was gay, Leonard’s only support in the not so progressive, rural South is Hap. Together, they struggle through misadventure in a bid to stay on the right side of the law in 1980s East Texas.

Hap and Leonard has been picked up for six one-hour episodes and will air in early 2016.
