Happy birthday to the award winning editor Gordon Van Gelder
The son of prominent mammalogist Richard Van Gelder and nephew of The New York Times senior editor Lawrence Van Gelder, Gordon Van Gelder served as the editor from 1997 until 2014 of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. He became the publisher in 2000, a position he still maintains, after relinquishing the role of editor beginning with the March/April 2015 issue to Charles Coleman Finlay. During his tenure, Van Gelder won two Hugo and World Fantasy Awards. His time as the managing editor of The New York Review of Science Fiction from 1988 to 1993 garnered him several Hugo nominations.
He edited several anthologies of stories that first appeared in F&SF including The Best From Fantasy & Science Fiction: The Fiftieth Anniversary Anthology (1999 with Edward L. Ferman), One Lamp: Alternate History Stories from The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction (2003), In Lands That Never Were: Tales of Swords and Sorcery from The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction (2004), Fourth Planet from the Sun: Tales of Mars from the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction (2005), THE VERY BEST OF FANTASY & SCIENCE FICTION: 60TH ANNIVERSARY ANTHOLOGY (2009), and THE VERY BEST OF FANTASY & SCIENCE FICTION: VOLUME 2 (2014). He’s also edited Welcome to the Greenhouse (2011), Lonely Souls (2013), Go Forth and Multiply (2017), and Welcome to Dystopia (2017).
All of us at Tachyon wish the eclectic Gordon a happy birthday!
