Behold the vibrant cover to THE NEW VOICES OF SCIENCE FICTION
Alec Checkerfield Uncategorized b&n sci-fi & fantasy blog, cover reveal, elizabeth story, hannu rajaniemi, jacob weisman, matt dixon, the new voices of science fiction
The fine folks at B&N SCI-FI & FANTASY BLOG were the first to reveal the cover to THE NEW VOICES OF SCIENCE FICTION, a new anthology edited by the award winners Hannu Rajaniemi and Jacob Weisman.
In 2017, Tachyon Publications and editors Peter S. Beagle and Jacob Weisman released THE NEW VOICES OF FANTASY, an anthology of some of the most exciting writers the gene has produced over the past decade—names like Sam J. Miller, Max Gladstone, Brooke Bolander, Alyssa Wong, and Amal El-Mohtar; names that had already grown familiar, provided you pay attention to who is out there winning awards for short fiction. And indeed, the anthology itself became an award-winner, picking up a 2018 World Fantasy Award.
With that kind of success in the rearview mirror, its only natural to try to replicate the experience on the other side of the genre divide. This fall, Jacob Weisman teams with award-winning author Hannu Rajaniemi (The Quantum Thief, Summerland, Invisible Planets) for the companion volume THE NEW VOICES OF SCIENCE FICTION, which features a laudable mission—to highlight the most vibrant new creators of cutting-edge SFF—and a truly enviable list of contributors.
What would you do if your collective of tiny bots suddenly decide to mutiny? Would you find bioprinted steak delicious, even after it was signed by the artist? Is an 11 second attention-span long enough to bond with a cryogenically-revived tourist? Would you sell your native language to send your daughter to college?
The avant garde of science fiction has appeared, arriving via time machines and portals that may (or may not) work properly. In this space-age sequel to award-winning anthology, The New Voices of Fantasy, The New Voices of Science Fiction has launched the rising stars of the last five years of science fiction, including Rebecca Roanhorse, Amal El-Mohtar, Alice Sola Kim, Sam J. Miller, E. Lily Yu, Rich Larson, Vina Jie-Min Prasad, Sarah Pinsker, Darcie Little Badger, S. Qiouyi Lu, Kelly Robson, Suzanne Palmer, Nino Cipri, and more. Their wide-ranging tales were hand-selected by cutting-edge author Hannu Rajaniemi (The Quantum Thief) and genre expert Jacob Weisman (Invaders).
So go ahead, join the starship revolution. The new kids hotwired the AI.

Award winners Peter S. Beagle and Jacob Weisman’s THE UNICORN ANTHOLOGY preview: “The Lion and the Unicorn” by A. C. Wise

The
Lion and the Unicorn
by A.
C. Wise
The
moment they see the unicorn boy—the shine of his skin, the
pearlescent spiral of his horn, his silken hair pale as
moonlight—they want him. It’s no wonder he prefers virgins. Their
uncertainty makes their plucking hands almost gentle. Some of them
are even sweet. Afraid.
But
even in them, the wanting does not wait long. And there is only one
answer to the wanting. It is not that he gives, but they take.
Insistent hands leave bruises in their wake, dropped petals
scatterwhickering the snow of his flesh. Hard, needful fingers tangle
in his hair, pulling strands free in blind ardour. Fingers press
inside him, pushing, choking, wanting without end.
Sometimes
there is pleasure, but it is brief and accidental. The men and women
who come to his tapestried chamber, all woven with scenes of his
downfall, are not there for him. They come to sate themselves,
scarcely knowing they do. After, they wake, spent, dazed, wondering
at the lost time. They leave feeling full. Light settles like good
wine in their bellies, and they are happy for a time. Until the
wanting comes round again and they find themselves back at his door
with hunger in their eyes.
This
has always been the way, for as long as he can remember. For almost
as long as he can remember.
Brief
snatches of memory creep from the corners of his mind at odd times,
almost crueller than the hands and mouths that come for him at every
hour. A pool with sweet water. Fruit, cool and crisp on his tongue.
The soft whicker of his father’s breath. A song his mother sang to
him. Strong, calloused fingers on his brow, soothing fever as his
horn pushed through his skin and he wailed like a child teething, not
understanding the pain.
Although
it was never spoken aloud, he knows his mother took his father
against his will—thus is it always with their kind—and that she
wept for it ever after. Overcome by wanting first, then grief
afterward, blinded by desire and need. But unlike any other, she
stayed, did her penance by remaining to guard his father from future
wanting hands, and by raising his child.
There
is no one to guard or protect him. Only a thin chain—fine as
sunlight—bound around his ankle and chafing his skin, running to a
ring of iron bolted to the floor. Sometimes, he thinks he hears
footsteps pause just outside his door. Hope and fear bloom in these
moments, but in the end, neither is fulfilled. The door does not
open, and he is left alone.
Slender
as it is, the chain binding him will not break for him. He has cut
his hands trying. So there is only this room, the silken hangings,
the soft pillows his face is pressed into to stifle tears and cries.
Beyond these tapestry-hung walls, he knows nothing of this place,
save there are other beasts here. He hears their cries sometimes—a
peacock’s mourn, the howl of a lonely wolf, something vast and dark
snuffling in sorrow through the halls.
At
least he cannot bear a child to the monsters who come for him with
ravenous hands. At least his mother had the foresight and courage to
smother his sister before she drew her first breath, in the instant
she followed him from the womb.

Magical Properties of Unicorn Ivory

Vocations
don’t grant vacations. I’m supposedly on holiday in London when I
get an offer no reporter could refuse: to see a unicorn in the wild.
I’m
with my friend Samantha, hanging out at her dad’s pub after a long
night’s clubbing, still wearing our dance-rumpled party dresses,
dying to get out of our heels. Sam’s father, Will, is tending bar
tonight, so it’s the perfect spot for late-night chips and
hair-of-the-dog nightcaps. Plus, most of the clientele is over 50. We
wouldn’t have to spend all evening judo-throwing chirpsers. (And
yes, this Latina’s been in London a full eight days and has decided
to adopt every bloody Britishism she hears. Deal.)
Or
so we thought. Sam flicks her head toward a guy sitting alone,
staring at us over his drink. He could be my dad, if my dad had
forgotten to bring a condom to his junior prom. Short, stout, but
really fit; looks like a cooper built his torso. The man’s never
heard of moisturizer. He’s wearing a black pinstripe shirt with a
skinny leather tie, black pleated pants and black ankle-boots. I am
sure some cute sales girl had dressed him—because nobody who cared
about him would’ve let him leave the house looking like dog’s
dinner.
And
now—shit—I scrutinized him too long. He comes over, beer in hand.
“Ladies,”
he says.
“We’re
not hookers,” says Sam. “I know these dresses might give a
gentleman the wrong impression.”
“Sorry
to disappoint,” I add, big smile.
“Right,”
he says, and turns on his heel.
“Hold
on, Gavin,” says Will, who’s just pulled up with my Moscow Mule.
“Don’t let these two termagants scare you off. Make a little room
for Gavin, Sam, will you?”
Gavin
considers us a moment, then pulls up the stool next to Samantha and
offers his hand. “Gavin Howard.”
“Oh!”
says Sam. She’s suddenly unironically warm—a rare demeanor for
her. “You’re the forest ranger. Dad’s told me about you. I’m
Sam.”
I
put out my hand. “And I’m Gabi Reál.”
“A
pleasure,” he says, then proceeds to purée my knucklebones—one
of those insecure guys who has to try to destroy the other person’s
hand. Charming.
“This
man’s a national hero,” Will says to me. “He’s keeping our
unicorns safe.”
Now
that
is interesting. Back in the States, we’ve heard reports of unicorns
appearing in forests throughout Great Britain. But in this age of
photo manipulation it’s hard to get anyone to believe anything
anymore.
So I
say as much: “Plenty of Americans don’t think unicorns are real,
you know.”
“Oh,
they’re real, Ms. Reál,” says Gavin, pleased with his wit. As if
I hadn’t heard that one 20 billion times.
“Americans,”
says Samantha. “You never think anything interesting could possibly
be happening anywhere else in the world, do you?”
The
Brits share a chuckle. I don’t join in.
“We
shouldn’t insult our visitor,” says Will. “I mean, if she were
to tell us snaggletoothed pookahs started appearing in California, I
suppose I’d want better proof than a picture.” He leans to Gavin
and adds, “Gabi’s a reporter for the
San Francisco Squint. Her column’s called ‘Let’s
Get Reál.’ Two million read it every week, don’t you know.”
Gavin
sizes me up like a squinting jeweler. “I’m all for reality. I
have no patience for falsehood. I wish more people would ‘get
reál.’” His voice gets weirdly sincere.
I
lean toward him and say, “Me too. My column’s subtitle is ‘Truth
or Death.’” I smile and sip my Mule.
It’s
not the first time I’ve chirpsed to land an interview. Gavin drinks
the rest of his beer but never takes his eyes off me. Neither do Will
or the slightly-disgusted Sam, who sees exactly what’s happening.
But
screw her; a story’s a story. Gavin sets down his glass and says
the words I am longing to hear: “You know, I’m working the New
Forest this weekend. If you’d like, it would be my pleasure to take
you with me. You might just see a unicorn for yourself.”
