Congratulations to Samantha Mills, winner of the 2023 Hugo Award!

Chengdu Worldcon, the 81st World Science Fiction Convention, announced the winners of the 2023 Hugo Awards. Samantha Mills won the award for her short story “Rabbit Test.” She previously won the Nebula, Locus, and Sturgeon for the same story. In April 2024, Tachyon will gleefully launch her debut novel, THE WINGS UPON HER BACK.

Chengdu Worldcon, the 81st World Science Fiction Convention announced the Finalists for the Hugo Awards, the Astounding Award for Best New Writer, and the Lodestar Award for Best Young Adult Book. Though no Tachyon titles were nominated Marjorie Liu and Samantha Mills both received nods while Charlie Jane Anders was a finalist for the Lodestar Award for Best Young Adult Book and Naseem Jamnia was a finalist for the Astounding Award for Best New Writer.

The flap copy on my advance edition declares that “Afterland” is a “high-concept feminist thriller that Lauren Beukes fans have been waiting for.” It is a thriller, I grant you that, and feminist in the sense that most of the men have been erased by a flu virus that develops into prostate cancer, but Beukes is too wise and story-oriented to wham away at ideas that have been thoroughly explored, sometimes at tedious length, on cable news and social media. She lets her tale do the talking, and the results are quite splendid.

One of the most
acclaimed science-fiction and fantasy short-story writers of his
generation, Michael Swanwick won an extraordinary five Hugo Awards
in six years (1999-2000 and 2002-2004). His stories also garnered
World Fantasy, Theodore Sturgeon, Asimov’s Readers’ Awards, Locus,
and SF Chronicle awards. Swanwick’s STATIONS OF THE TIDE (1991) won
the prestigious Nebula Award for Best Novel.

His other novels
include IN THE DRIFT (1985), VACUUM FLOWERS (1987), JACK FAUST
(1997), and BONES OF THE EARTH (2002). The many collections of
Swanwick’s numerous acclaimed short tales include GRAVITY’S ANGELS
(1991), TALES OF OLD EARTH (2000), CIGAR-BOX FAUST AND OTHER MINATURES (2003), MICHAEL SWANWICK’S FIELD GUIDE TO THE MESOZOIC MEGAFAUNA (2004), THE DOG SAID BOW-WOW (2007), THE BEST OF MICHAEL
SWANWICK (2008), SOLSTICE FIRE (2013), SEASON’S GREETINGS (2014), and
NOT SO MUCH SAID THE CAT (2016).

OMNI, PENTHOUSE,
AMAZING, ASIMOV’S SCIENCE FICTION, NEW DIMENSIONS, and FULL
SPECTRUM number among the many venues with Swanwick’s short
fiction. A frequent contributor to the NEW YORK REVIEW OF SCIENCE
FICTION, he previously published the controversial essays on the
state of the science fiction and fantasy fields: The
User’s Guide to the Postmoderns (1986) and “In the Tradition…” (1994).

Congrats to Tachyon contributors on their Hugo Awards

While no 2014 Tachyon publications won 2015 Hugo Awards, announced at Sasquan on August 22, two different Tachyon contributors went home with statues.

Julie Dillon, who produced the gorgeous cover to THE VERY BEST OF KATE ELLIOTT, won her third consecutive Hugo award for Best Professional Artist.

John Joseph Adams, editor of the acclaimed EPIC: LEGENDS OF FANTASY, won the Hugo award for Best Semiprozine. Adams shared the award with his LIGHTSPEED MAGAZINE co-editors Stefan Rudnicki, Rich Horton, Wendy N. Wagner, and Christie Yant.

Celebrate Tachyon’s 20th anniversary with Sheila Williams

Sheila Williams, the Hugo Award-winning editor of ASIMOV’S SCIENCE FICTION, delivers the first in a series of essays celebrating 20 years of Tachyon Publications.

I first met Jacob Weisman about twenty-nineyears ago, when he was a rail-thin college junior with jet-black
hair. Jacob showed up at Davis Publications in the spring of 1986 to
intern at ASIMOV’S.
I gave him some of the usual editorial-assistant type chores, like
filing and proofreading, but I also asked him for brief descriptions
of the purchased stories for the magazine’s art editor. A story’s
illustrator is expected to read the entire tale, but the editor would
use the intern’s synopsis to make sure the artist was on the right
track. Jacob was shy, but forthright. He enjoyed reading the material
but made candid and discerning comments about the stories. I quickly
realized that he was someone who truly loved science fiction and that
his tastes were not all that different from mine.

When Jacob founded Tachyon, I was delighted to
help him reach out to his favorite authors. I passed along a few
addresses and put in a good word with authors who had never heard of
Jacob. I knew that he had an abiding passion for their work and would
ensure that his company would do well for them. Jacob was the only
publisher I turned to when it came time to edit
ASIMOV’S
SCIENCE FICTION MAGAZINE 30^TH
ANNIVERSARY ANTHOLOGY. Jacob had a few suggestions about authors whom
he wanted to see in the book, and all of them were on my own short
list. It was exhilarating to create the book with him and Jill [Roberts, Tachyon managing editor]. I
also had great fun assembling group author signings at the Tachyon
table to promote the anthology at conventions. Patient Jacob put up
with the raucous hilarity that develops when such authors as Michael
Swanwick, Nancy Kress, James Patrick Kelly, Connie Willis, and even
the ever-debonair Robert Silverberg are commandeered to sign books
together for an hour or two.

I won my first Hugo Award for Best Editor,
Short Form in 2011 at the World Con in Reno, Nevada. That evening was
one of the high points of my life, but it was also a little
lonely—unfortunately, the ceremony had conflicted with my oldest
daughter’s freshman move-in day at college. The next evening was
rescued by Jacob and his wife, Rina, who asked whether they could
take me to dinner to celebrate my achievement. That lovely meal also
ranks among my life’s happiest events.

A
friendship that has lasted nearly three decades contains many
wonderful moments of celebration. I’m very pleased that this time the
celebration is for twenty years of Jacob’s discerning vision at the
helm of Tachyon Publications.

THE EMPEROR’S SOUL does all of the impressive things that any of Sanderson’s novels do

Vandal at The Undending Backlog provides this spoiler-free review of Brandon Sanderson’s The Emperor’s Soul.

Be it a thousand-page installment of a 10,000 page epic or a hundred page novella centered on the introduction of a second magic system to an already-existing world, Brandon Sanderson writes better fantasy than anybody else going. The Emperor’s Soul, the 2013 Hugo Award winner for Best Novella, takes on the second of these tasks and through a simple, well-plotted structure and a dynamite conclusion that makes superb use of the newly-introduced Cosmere system of Forging, becomes as deep and engaging a contribution to Sanderson’s universe as any of the other 8 far-lengthier volumes of the series.

In the end, this novella does all of the impressive things that any of Sanderson’s novels do, at a length far more modest. We get a look at another fascinating and well-applied system of magic that absolutely MUST make another appearance, either in a sequel volume to this one or a book that merges these two aspects of Sel.
