Michael J. Sullivan, author of Hollow World, joins the impressive list of writers participating in the initial Goodreads: Ask the Author event.

One of the great things about writing in today’s technological age is the ability to directly communicate with readers. This type of access just wasn’t possible in the past. But finding how to communicate with your favorite author isn’t always easy, but Goodreads is here to help. Today Goodreads is launching a great new program to bring authors and readers together, and I’m proud to be a part of it. It’s called “Ask the Author,” and it gives you the opportunity to interact with your favorite authors (and me) to get answers to all those burning questions you may have. Masterful storytelling takes hold in Michael J. Sullivan’s HOLLOW WORLD

Literary Escapism lavishes praise upon Michael J. Sullivan’s Hollow World.

Masterful storytelling takes hold in Hollow Worldby Michael J. Sullivan. In Hollow World, we learn that Sullivan can weave a story no matter the time period as he effortlessly brings us into modern-day suburban Detroit and two thousand years into the future. With intrigue and suspense, Sullivan shows a story that is both foreign and familiar as any good science fiction novel does. Hands down, this is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time.

One of the highlights of Sullivan’s writing is his ability to create a fully realized world. This was especially true in Hollow World, the strange version of Earth in two thousand years. People have become androgynous beings which have illness removed from their DNA. The world is divided between above and below ground. These themes were eloquently shown and there were so many beautiful details it was hard to choose just a few. I especially liked how Hollow World revered the professions of Meteorologist and Artist highly. Each was for a different reason but it showed how science and art can live in harmony.

The Bibliophilic Book Blog praises Michael J. Sullivan’s Hollow World.

HOLLOW WORLD is a beautifully written science fiction tale. The author created a very well-developed and intricate version of Earth’s future and gives it perspective through the eyes of someone from our time. Ellis Rogers is a man with a lot of pain in his heart and it’s absolutely fascinating to watch him discover the future. HOLLOW WORLD isn’t a science- or action-heavy novel, so if you’re looking for that, this might not be the book for you. However, if you enjoy thought-provoking sociological and philosophical questions wrapped in a time-travel adventure – you’ll love HOLLOW WORLD. The writing is absolutely solid, deceptively simple, and will leave you utterly changed. HOLLOW WORLD is one of the best science fiction books I’ve read in a long time. Pick it up!!

HOLLOW WORLD is an impressive piece of world building

Among his murmurings and musings on the world of imaginative fiction, Alastair Savage reviews Michael J. Sullivan’s Hollow World.

It’s an impressive piece of world building. We find a society living without families, want, deprivation, crime or war. However, in the process, people have lost much of what makes us truly human: emotions like fear, ambition, anger and love.

Sullivan’s real interest in writing Hollow World is to examine the conflict that currently seems to be tearing the United States apart. That is the conflict between liberal and conservative America, and their inability to come to peace even when the necessity for compromise is blindly obvious to all. Sullivan posits a future world where all our present-day hopes and aspirations have been swept away, leaving a world utterly alien in its place.

I enjoyed Hollow World. It was especially nice to see a positive portrayal of Detroit after Jeffrey Eugenides’ Middlesex told the story of a city in flames, and the documentary Waiting for Sugar Man showed streets that were crumbling into ruins. If there is one weakness in the book it is that Sullivan has a touch of the Quammens, in that everything is compared to a present day film, book or actor. That kept breaking the story for me, especially when it was a reference to some more obscure point of Americana.

HOLLOW WORLD is a special book

At Indie-Fantasy, Mike A. Wants offers his lengthy take on Michael J. Sullivan’s Hollow World.

Hollow World by Michael J. Sullivan is a special book. Not only because of its history of origin (being a Kickstarter that got over $30.000 instead of the needed $3.000, a sign of the trust readers put into the author), or because it is so vastly different than his Riyria Revelations books. Rather, the quality of the book comes from the wonderful story of an average guy going on the adventure of his life, struggling to find what happiness he can still get. A broken soul looking for salvation. The rest didn’t matter that much. It felt fulfilling enough to watch Ellis stumble through the new world. New possibilities open up for him in places he’d have never looked before.

The protagonist offers you a seat besides him, to watch the story unfold slowly, and I’ve taken that seat readily. You’ll either do the same, or get lost in the measured pace. It is a book that has the potential to split its readership. I can see people loving it as much as I did, or hating it with the same passion. I want to give you one word of warning though: Don’t expect something remotely similar to the Riyria Revelations series. It is not. It doesn’t try to be similar, which for this story is a very good choice. It is vastly different and I think it is the greatest book Michael J. Sullivan has written to this day.
