A
Thousand Flowers
byÂ
Margo
Lanagan
Imagine
a pure white stallion, the finest conformed you have ever seen, so
balanced, so smooth, so long-necked, you could picture how he would
gallop, easy-curved and rippling as water, with the mane and tail
foaming on him. He was muscled for swiftness, he was big
around the heart, and his legs were straight and sound, firm and
fine. He’d a grand head, a king’s among horses, such as is
stitched upon banners, or painted on shields in a baron’s banquet
hall. The finest pale velvet upholstered it, with the veins tracing
their paths beneath, running his good blood about, warming and
enlivening every neat-made corner of him.
Now
imagine that out of that fine forehead, just as on a shield, spears a
battle-spike—of narwhal-horn, say, spiraling like that. Then take
away the spike’s straps and buckles, so that the tusk grows
straight from the horse’s brow—grows,
yes, from the skull, sprouts from the velvet brow as if naturally,
like a stag-antler, like the horn of a rhinockerous.
Then
…
Then
add magic. I don’t know how you will do this if you have not seen
it; I myself only saw it the once and bugger me if I can describe it,
the quality that tells you a thing is bespelled, or sorcerous itself.
It is luminosity of a kind, cool but strong. All-encompassing and yet
very delicate, it trickles in your bones; slowly it lifts the hairs
on your legs, your arms, your chest, in waves like fields of
high-grown grass under a gentle wind. And it thins and hollows the
sounds of the world, owl hoots and rabbit scutters, and beyond them
it rumors of vast rustlings and seethings, the tangling and
untangling of the workings of the universe, this giant nest of
interminable snakes.
When
something like this appears before you, let me tell you, you must
look at it; you must look at nothing else; your eyes are pulled to it
like a falcon to the lure. Twinned to that compulsion is a terror,
swimming with the magic up and down your bones, of being seen
yourself, of having the creature turn and lock you to its slavery
forever, or freeze you with its gaze; whatever it wishes, it might
do. It has the power, and you yourself have nothing, and are
nothing.
It
did not look at me. It turned its fine white head just a touch my
way, then tossed its mane, as if to say, How
foolish of me, even to notice such a drab being! And
then it moved off, into the trees at the far side of the clearing.
The
rhythm of its walking beat in my muscles, and I followed; the sight
of it drew me like pennants and tent-tops on a tourney-field, and I
could not but go after. Its tail, at times, braided flowers into
itself, then plaited silver threads down its strands, then lost those
also and streamed out like weed in brook-water. Its haunches were
pearly and moony and muscular. I wanted to catch up to its head and
ask it, ask it … What impossible thing could I ask? And what if
it should turn and answer—how terrible would that be? So, all
confusion, I stumbled after, between the flowers of the forest,
across their carpet and among their curtains and beneath their
ribbons and festoons.
We
came to a streamside; the creature led me into the water, stirring
the stars on the surface. And while I watched a trail of them spin
around a dimple left by his passing, he vanished—whether by walking
away, or by leaping up and becoming stars himself, or by melting into
the air, I could not say, but I was standing alone, in only
starlight, my feet numb and my ankles aching with the water’s
snow-melt cold.
I
stepped out onto the muddy bank; it was churned with many
hoof-prints, all unshod that I could distinguish. There was no magic
anywhere, only the smell of the mud and of wet rock, and behind that,
like a tapestry behind a table, of the forest and its flowers.
Something
lay higher up the bank, which the horse had fetched me to see. It was
a person’s body; I thought it must be dead, so still did it lie.

Jeff Somers for B&N SCI-FI & FANTASY BLOG speculates How 15 of Your Favorite Authors Might Finish George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice & Fire including Jeff VanderMeer and Charlie Jane Anders.
Jeff VanderMeer
As the armies of undead from north breach the Wall into Westeros, the true savage reality of the Night’s King’s plan is revealed: the threat is not from his zombie hordes, but from the environmental devastation they leave in their wake (it’s kind of a metaphor). With disaster creeping toward King’s Landing, Jon sends a small band of warriors—Brienne of Tarth (The Soldier), Cersei (The Queen), Arya (The Assassin), and Sansa (The Diplomat)—to investigate a rumor that he hopes will prove to be their salvation: that the Tower of Joy is actually a tunnel (and either way, it is certainly not supposed to represent a penis—some things are not a metaphor)
Charlie Jane Anders
The final battle appears lost, and the Night’s King is glorying in his mad triumph. Suddenly, Arya appears before him, wielding Needle. The battles rages behind her; she is bloody and desperate. The Night’s King mocks her—what will one small girl do? Arya says she’s not alone—suddenly Danny stands next to her. Then Sansa, Melisandre, and Brienne appear. The women link hands and stare balefully at the Night’s King as Melisandre incants a spell.Â

At TOR.COM, Jo Walton reveals her reading list from March.
Hi, and welcome to a new regular monthly feature on all the books I’ve read in the last month. I read a whole bunch of things, and a whole bunch of kinds of things, fiction and non-fiction, genre and non-genre, letters, poetry, a mix.
March was a long end-of-winter month here, enlivened with an exciting trip to Hong Kong for Melon Con. I finished 27 books in March, and here they are.
The Poetical Works of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Vol I, 1876. Some of the poems in this were great, but some of them were trying to be folk ballads without really having that sense of how ballads work. Having said that, I’m very happy to be reading more of her work than just the amazing Sonnets From the Portuguese and her letters. I can see why she was considered a superstar poet in her own day.
Rachel Swirsky, on her eponymous blog, bids a farewell to Carrrie Vaughn’s urban fantasy series about a werewolf named Kitty.
Poor Kitty Norville. Everyone always laughs at the werewolf named Kitty, even though, as she points out, she had the name first.
I’ve read every single one of Carrie Vaughn’s urban fantasy series staring a werewolf named Kitty. So, of course, just like Mary Robinette’s Glamourist Histories and John Scalzi’s Old Man’s War, Carrie’s books ended last year.

The
Highest Justice
byÂ
Garth
Nix
The
girl did not ride the unicorn, because no one ever did. She rode a
nervous oat-colored palfrey that had no name, and led the second
horse, a blind and almost-deaf ancient who long ago had been called
Rinaldo and was now simply Rin. The unicorn sometimes paced next to
the palfrey, and sometimes not.
Rin
bore the dead Queen on his back, barely noticing her twitches and
mumbles and the cloying stench of decaying flesh that seeped out
through the honey- and spice-soaked bandages. She was tied to the
saddle, but could have snapped those bonds if she had thought to do
so. She had become monstrously strong since her death three days
before, and the intervention by her daughter that had returned her to
a semblance of life.
Not
that Princess Jess as a witch or necromancer. She knew no more magic
than any other young woman. But she was fifteen years old, a virgin,
and she believed the old tale of the kingdom’s founding: that the
unicorn who had aided the legendary Queen Jessibelle the First was
still alive and would honor the compact made so long ago, to come in
the time of the kingdom’s need.
The
unicorn’s secret name was Elibet. Jess had called this name to the
waxing moon at midnight from the tallest tower of the castle, and had
seen something ripple in answer across the surface of the earth’s
companion in the sky.
An
hour later Elibet was in the tower. She was somewhat like a horse
with a horn, if you looked at her full on, albeit one made of white
cloud and moonshine. Looked at sideways she was a fiercer thing, of
less familiar shape, made of storm clouds and darkness, the horn more
prominent and bloody at the tip, like the setting sun. Jess preferred
to see a white horse with a silvery horn, and so that is what she
saw.
Jess
had called the unicorn as her mother gasped out her final breath. The
unicorn had come too late to save the Queen, but by then Jess had
another plan. The unicorn listened and then by the power of her horn,
brought back some part of the Queen to inhabit a body from which life
had all too quickly sped.
They
had then set forth, to seek the Queen’s poisoner, and mete out
justice.
Jess
halted her palfrey as they came to a choice of ways. The royal forest
was thick and dark in these parts, and the path was no more than a
beaten track some dozen paces wide. It forked ahead, into two lesser,
narrower paths.
“Which
way?” asked Jess, speaking to the unicorn, who had once again
mysteriously appeared at her side.
The
unicorn pointed her horn at the left-hand path.
“Are
you sure—” Jess asked. “No, it’s just that—”
“The
other way looks more traveled—”
“No,
I’m not losing heart—”
“I
know you know—”
“Talking
to yourself?” interjected a rough male voice, the only other sound
in the forest, for if the unicorn had spoken, no one but Jess had
heard her.
The
palfrey shied as Jess swung around and reached for her sword. But she
was too late, as a dirty bearded ruffian held a rusty pike to her
side. He grinned, and raised his eyebrows.
“Here’s
a tasty morsel, then,” he leered. “Step down lightly, and no
tricks.”
“Elibet!”
said Jess indignantly.
The
unicorn slid out of the forest behind the outlaw, and lightly pricked
him in the back of his torn leather jerkin with her horn. The man’s
eyebrows went up still farther and his eyes darted to the left and
right.
“Ground
your pike,” said Jess. “My friend can strike faster than any
man.”
“I
give up,” he wheezed, leaning forward as if he might escape the
sharp horn. “Ease off on the spear, and take me to the sheriff. I
swear—”
“Hunger,”
interrupted the Queen. Her voice had changed with her death. It had
become gruff and leathery, and significantly less human.
The
bandit glanced at the veiled figure under the broad-brimmed pilgrim’s
hat.
“What?”
he asked hesitantly.
“Hunger,”
groaned the Queen. “Hunger.”
She
raised her right arm, and the leather cord that bound her to the
saddle’s high cantle snapped with a sharp crack. A bandage came
loose at her wrist and dropped to the ground in a series of spinning
turns, revealing the mottled blue-bruised skin beneath.
“Shoot
’em!” shouted the bandit as he dove under Jess’s horse and
scuttled across the path toward the safety of the trees.
