With forty years of
experience in the book business as retail bookseller, a book
buyer, and an associate editor, James DeMaiolo brings his extensive
experience in sales, marketing, and publicity to Tachyon. Along the
way, he honed his expertise with stints at Simon & Schuster,
Henry Holt, Berkeley, Tor, and Applause Books.

Since joining Tachyon in 2010, he’s been instrumental in the development and production of many projects, most notably the World Fantasy Award winner THE NEW VOICES OF FANTASY, INVADERS: 22 TALES FROM THE OUTER LIMITS OF LITERATURE, and the Particle Books line.

DeMaiolo is, also, a
published playwright (The Scarlet Letter: the play
[1997]) and edited a collection of essays on the Federal Theatre
Project and a Living Newspaper scenario, The Thrill of Finding
Money (2010).

Writer, editor, and publisher Jacob Weisman founded Tachyon Publications in 1995. Originally the goal was to bring back the old masters who were out of print, as evident by Clifford Simak and Mary Shelley collections and novels by Stanley Weinbaum and Robert Nathan. Tachyon published 2-3 titles a year and only sold to specialty bookstores. In 2003, Weisman decided to “start the company over from scratch.” He wisely hired Managing Editor Jill Roberts, secured distribution that brought Tachyon books to mainstream bookstores, and expanded the line to 8-10 books a year. The Tachyon titles have won Nebula, Hugo, World Fantasy, Shirley Jackson, Theodore Sturgeon, John W. Campbell, Neukom Institute Literary Arts, Mythopoeic, and Locus awards. Weisman, himself, garnered World Fantasy Award nominations in 1999, 2009, 2010 and winning the 2018 Best Anthology Award for THE NEW VOICES IN FANTASY (with Peter S. Beagle).

While Weisman oversees all of Tachyon books, he was directly responsible for several anthologies including THE TREASURY OF THE FANTASTIC (with David Sandner; originally published by Frog, Ltd), THE SWORD & SORCERY ANTHOLOGY (with David Hartwell), INVADERS: 22 TALES FROM THE OUTER LIMITS OF LITERATURE, the above mentioned THE NEW VOICES IN FANTASY, and forthcoming THE UNICORN ANTHOLOGY (with Beagle).

Prior to Tachyon, Weisman edited and published 14 issues of the quarterly fantasy magazine The Thirteenth Moon and worked for the Seattle SuperSonics. His writings have appeared in The Nation, Realms of Fantasy, The Louisville Courier-Journal, The Seattle Weekly, The Cooper Point Journal, Field of Fantasies, and in the college textbook, Sport in Contemporary Society.

Join Tachyon publisher Jacob Weisman, co-editor (with Peter S. Beagle) of the World Fantasy award winning THE NEW VOICES OF FANTASY at the 16th San Francisco Writers Conference, February 14-18.

Attendees will join with 100+ presenters and fellow writers from across the country and around the world at this year’s event. The SFWC events are consistently rated among the top writers’ conferences anywhere. Our goal is to help writers become published authors as we help them become better at the craft and business of writing. The SFWC is also one of the friendliest conferences.

Weisman will be speaking on the Meet the Fiction Editors panel on Friday, February 15, 3:30-4:30.

Thanksgiving Science Fiction Society (TSFS) is a non-profit organization for people who are interested in science fiction, speculative fiction, fantasy, and related genres (SF/F) in all forms. TSFS was organized in September, 2013, following the unfortunate death of Jaelle of Armida, the much-beloved director of DarkoverCon for many years.

At the 2018 World Fantasy Convention in Baltimore, MD, two Tachyon titles won the prestigious World Fantasy Award. THE NEW VOICES OF FANTASY, co-edited by Peter S. Beagle and Jacob Weisman, received recognition as Best Anthology and Jane Yolen’s THE EMERALD CIRCUS for Best Collection. Ellen Klages took home Best Novella for the non-Tachyon titles Passing Strange. Charles de Lint was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Scintillation is a small literary focused SF convention on the weekend of Canadian Thanksgiving, that is the 5th to 7th October 2018. All people of goodwill are welcome.
