Since joining Tachyon in 2002 as the managing editor, Jill Roberts has overseen the remaking of the press from one that originally published 2-3 titles a year and only sold to specialty bookstores into its present incarnation of 8-10 books a year and mainstream distribution. Tachyon titles under her watch have won Nebula, Hugo, World Fantasy, Shirley Jackson, Campbell, Neukom, Sturgeon, and Locus awards and routinely make “best of the year” lists. For the 17th San Francisco Writers Conference, Tachyon publisher Jacob Weisman and managing editor Jill Roberts will be hosting Craft Workshop: Editing & Polishing Your Prose on Saturday, February 15 at 2:15.

The San Francisco Writers Conference (“SFWC”) enjoys a rich literary culture. Over the course of four days in mid-February, over 500 attendees and renowned keynote authors, presenters, editors, and agents, attend SFWC, combining the best of both the traditional publishing industry with the latest technology to empower authors to publish anywhere. Situated just north of Silicon Valley, the SFWC is truly a one-of-a-kind celebration of craft, commerce, and community.

I also enjoyed IN CALABRIA by Peter S. Beagle, which presents a lovely story of an ornery old farmer who discovers that unicorns have decided to take up residence on his land.

Julie Phillips, author of the extraordinary, award-winning biography JAMES TIPTREE, JR.: THE DOUBLE LIFE OF ALICE B. SHELDON, and her daughter Jooske van Houten, stopped by the Tachyon offices for a visit.

Jooske, Jacob, Rina, Jill, and Julie hung out for several hours. Discussions ranged from Tiptree (of course) to Julie’s book projects (she’s working on a Le Guin biography and on a nonfiction book on writing and mothering, THE BABY ON THE FIRE ESCAPE), about not being at the Helsinki WorldCon, and the forthcoming eclipse.

Emily Swaim @swaimea: Return of the novella as a storytelling medium, in regards to companion stories for franchises and the popularity of Japanese light novels

I can’t speak with much experience about the Japanese light novels, but the return of the novella is a rather nice development. You might have noticed that we’ve snuck in a few in the that last couple of years. For us, it’s always been a budget and space issue and I’d love to do more. In some ways, the novella is just catching the tail-end of what caused the increase in short fiction readership in recent years: online and digital publishing. I’ll single Tor.com and Tachyon Publications as two publishers that have made a mark with their novellas. More will follow.

Nalo Hopkinson, author of FALLING IN LOVE WITH HOMINIDS and fellow writers Nnedi Okorafor, and Jewelle Gomez killed on their panel on at the 2016 Black Comix Arts Festival (BCAF). The fun-filled trio talked about monsters that appear in their work, the writing process, Afrofuturism, and the futures of African American and African speculative-fiction.
