THE VERY BEST OF KATE ELLIOTT and HANNU RAJANIEMI: COLLECTED FICTION are standout SF/F collections

For the B&N SCI-FI & FANTASY BLOG, Sam Reader declares HANNU RAJANIEMI: COLLECTED FICTION and THE VERY BEST OF KATE ELLIOTT as standout SF/F collections.

Hannu Rajaniemi: Collected Fiction by Hannu Rajaniemi
You may already know Rajaniemi from his buzzy Jean le Flambeur series (The Quantum Thief, The Fractal Prince, The Causal Angel); if that’s the case, rest assured that his Collected Fiction offers the same fantastical quality, but in a dozen different flavors. If you’re new to his charms, this is an excellent place to start: Rajaniemi writes post-singular fairy tales about computer-dragon romances, technologically-uplifted cats and dogs, and haunted space stations. If you like your science fiction lavish and the science part a little outlandish, this is definitely the book for you.
Standout stories: “Tyche and the Ants”, “Elegy for a Young Elk”

The Very Best of Kate Elliott by Kate Elliott
Kate Elliott is an amazing person. Full stop. Her writing is gorgeously toned and filled with evocative imagery. She’s been a well-respected, prolific fantasy author for decades, and she’s no slouch with science fiction, either. (Also, she used to fight in the SCA in full freaking armor.) The Very Best collects all the short stories from her illustrious career in one volume, from performances of Shakespeare on alien worlds, to the reflective thoughts of a prisoner hung at the gates of a city. Her stories are exciting, unsettling, and brimming with sensory detail.
Standout stories: “My Voice is in My Sword”, “The Gates of Joriun”
Hopefully these collections will help kickstart your summer of short stories. If you think I missed any, feel free to suggest your own in the comments.

Yes, I love this cake. Not too sweet and really strongly chocolate.

I thought if you surprise me with a real recipe, I can surprise you (and myself) with a real cake. 😀 It’s huge, though! I had to make some cupcakes because my cake tin was too small. But my boardgamefriends didn’t mind!
