For the 17th San Francisco Writers Conference, Tachyon publisher Jacob Weisman and managing editor Jill Roberts will be hosting Craft Workshop: Editing & Polishing Your Prose on Saturday, February 15 at 2:15.

The San Francisco Writers Conference (“SFWC”) enjoys a rich literary culture. Over the course of four days in mid-February, over 500 attendees and renowned keynote authors, presenters, editors, and agents, attend SFWC, combining the best of both the traditional publishing industry with the latest technology to empower authors to publish anywhere. Situated just north of Silicon Valley, the SFWC is truly a one-of-a-kind celebration of craft, commerce, and community.

Experience SF BY THE BAY, a grand celebration of San Francisco Bay Area science fiction and fantasy

In partnership with SF in SF, Borderlands Books, Locus magazine, Tachyon Publications, Consonance and other organizations, SF by the Bay, February 1 – April 30, presents over two dozen programs, including film screenings, author talks, live dramas, lectures, panel discussions, a filk music concert, book displays, a costume contest, and an exhibit of rare books, magazines and art drawn from the Main Library’s J. Francis McComas Fantasy and Science Fiction Collection, a reference collection of more than 3000 books and magazines. With a focus on local authors and culture, the SF by the Bay exhibit and programs highlight the San Francisco Bay Area’s important contributions to the history of fantasy and science fiction and celebrate this ongoing history in relation to its international and multimedia contexts.

Acclaimed science, science fiction, and historical fiction writer Ellen Klages, author of the World Fantasy Award nominated WICKED WONDERS and the World Fantasy Award winner Passing Strange, is discussing and giving a tour about the forgotten history of San Francisco’s gay bars from the 1890s through the 1980’s at The American Bookbinders Museum in San Francisco on June 22 beginning at 2pm.

Every city has its meeting places, where like-minded people go to socialize. For nearly a century in pre-Stonewall, pre-liberation San Francisco, bars were the only public places where gays and lesbians could meet openly. Those storefronts created a sense of community by establishing a “neighborhood” feeling that came from a shared identity rather than geography.

Meet the acclaimed Michael Blumlein

The amazing Dr. Michael Blumlein, author of THE ROBERTS, with the help of writer and jazz pianist Carter Scholz celebrates the release of his new novel Longer at Bird & Beckett in San Francisco on Sunday, June 23 at 2pm.

Michael Blumlein has had a distinguished 30+ year career in speculative fiction, and presents his novel, Longer, today at Bird & Beckett with a little help from his friend, fellow writer, and jazz pianist Carter Scholz.

Library Journal says, “Blumlein gives us Waiting for Godot, set in space, in succinct and intelligent storytelling.” We like anything that reference Sam Beckett, of course, though it’s not certain how that fits this wonderful novel. Nimble and tender, poignant and thoughtful. At once complex and simple. A touch of the marvelous, floating just out of reach where philosophy and science mingle in the miasma. Ultimately, it’s seems to be about the decisions the heart leads us to make about our lives and the work we do. And about how we avoid, embrace or ponder the inevitability of death.
