San Francisco Public Library shares Gordon Van Gelder’s talk at the reception for SF by the Bay on Feb. 15, 2020.

At the Catalan site LA LECTORA, Edgar Cotes cites Ann and Jeff VanderMeer’s THE NEW WEIRD in his article “A weird story of two cities“.

In the introduction to THE NEW WEIRD (2008), Jeff and Ann VanderMeer defined it as follows: “A type of alternative, urban literature that subverts preconceived ideas found in traditional fantasy, using realistic and complex real world models as a starting point for creating scenarios that can combine elements of both science fiction and fantasy”. Despite the ambiguity of the definition, a number of authors, such as Alastair Reynolds, Clive Baker, KJ Bishop, Mary Gentle, or Justina Robson, endorsed this manifesto and set up a transgressive work that overturned the most incarcerated models. a certain kind of fantastic literature.

A true treasure, Lisa Goldstein’s IVORY APPLES is one of the best books of 2019

At STRANGE HORIZONS, Paul Kincaid’s novel of 2019 was Lisa Goldstein’s IVORY APPLES.

IVORY APPLES by Lisa Goldstein, who continues to work wonders with contemporary fantasy that looks as if it is pursuing a familiar path until she takes a wild and unexpected detour.

This book is a true treasure, worthy of multiple re-readings, a perfect holiday gift for the child in all of us.

As part of his Eating Authors series, Laswrence M. Schoen interviews Goldstein.

LMS: Welcome, Lisa. Thank you for starting the year for us. Please tell me about your most memorable meal.

LG: The most memorable meal I ever had was in Rome, at a restaurant called Grappolo d’Oro. I knew that food in Italy was good, of course, but I didn’t really know how good. I ordered ravioli with cheese and something called tartufi, which turned out to be truffles. Not only had I never had truffles before, I had barely heard of them; if you’d asked, I would have said it was a play by Moliere. They were deep, earthy, full of dark, delicious flavor. And the rest of the ingredients were great too, each one in perfect balance with the others, and tasting as if they’d been created just that morning.
After that, I ordered truffles at every restaurant that listed them on the menu. Another restaurant, in Perugia, had truffles in something called scamorza, a kind of baked cheese. This was my second-most memorable meal — the place was called Il Settimo Sigillo, which means “the seventh seal,” and had something of a Knights Templar motif. We never found out why.

When I got back I looked around for more truffles.

Unfortunately, they’re phenomenally expensive here. Black truffles, the kind I like, mostly grow in France and Italy, and they’re hard to farm; usually they’re hunted with truffle hounds. The only solution, I guess, is to go back to Italy.

Both FOREWORD and PAT’S FANTASY HOTLIST include Kameron Hurley’s MEET ME IN THE FUTURE among the best books of 2019.

Although some are definitely better than others, overall the stories contained within the pages of Meet Me in the Future are all good reads in their own right. Even better, though disparate in style and tone, there are enough recurring themes explored throughout the tales that the book stands rather well on its own.
PAT’S FANTASY HOTLIST

LYNN’S BOOK BLOG ranks Lisa Goldstein’s IVORY APPLES as one of the best.

This is my first book by Lisa Goldstein but here is an author that definitely needs to go on my auto buy list. I don’t know what it is but here is an author that can make a book feel personal. Like this book was written for me. It was, I swear it was. The writing is really lovely, hypnotic almost.

IVORY APPLES is a challenging and entertaining read that provokes reflection on the responsibilities of creative people and the nature of art — its influence, possibilities and costs.

IVORY APPLES is a haunting story of what a classic fantasy work can do for and to its readers and its creator; on the other, it’s a pretty wonderful, clear-eyed, and unsentimental fantasy novel entirely on its own terms, muse or no muse.

Lisa Goldstein’s unusual IVORY APPLES casts a lingering spell on the reader

For BOOKSHINE AND RAINBOWS, Steph Warren enjoys Lisa Goldstein’s IVORY APPLES.

IVORY APPLES is a story about stories and inspiration; growing
up and responsibility; accepting oneself, and making the best of what
you already have. This is not a happily-ever-after fairytale, but a
grimmer story of toil and trauma. But magic is magic, whatever the
flavour; and Lisa Goldstein’s glimpse into the dark secrets of
creativity casts a lingering spell on the reader that no counter-spell
can completely dispell.

BOOKSHELF FANTASIES offers similar sentiments.

[T]he book is different and unusual in all sorts of ways, and Kate
makes for a devious and menacing bad guy beneath her pleasant and
child-friendly exterior. I’d definitely like to read more by this
author.

On Mary Robinette Kowal’s blog, Goldstein contributes a “My Favorite Bit” guest column centering around IVORY APPLES.

A long time ago I wrote a story about a man whose mother died. Like a
lot of people, my own mother had trouble with the difference between
fiction and non-fiction, and she was worried that the story meant that I
wanted her to die. I spent a lot of time trying to explain to her that
of course that wasn’t true, that stories didn’t work that way. I told
her that the man and his mother were made up, not based on anyone I
knew. I told her that the point of the story — the point of every story
— was to give the main character a problem to deal with, and that the
man’s problem was so terrible because he had loved his mother very much.
Even after all of that, though, she wasn’t convinced.

It was only years later that I realized I had never written about a
problematic mother, and that part of the reason was that I worried about
what she would think. (She read everything I wrote. Well, everything I
showed her, anyway.) After she died, though, I started a novel about
the worst mother figure you could imagine.

That sounds bad, doesn’t it? I didn’t run to the computer the day we
buried her, really. I started the book several years later, and even
then I didn’t completely understand why I felt free to write it.

Author of 14 novels, Lisa Goldstein burst upon the literary landscape
after winning the National Book Award for her first novel, The
Red Magician (1982). She followed that tour de force with The
Dream Years (1985),
which garnered her a World Fantasy Award nomination. Goldstein followed those up with a string of acclaimed works including A
Mask for the General (1987;
Arthur C. Clarke nominee),
Tourists (1989;
an
expansion of the lauded short story),
Strange
Devices of the Sun and Moon (1993),
Summer
King, Winter Fool (1994),
Walking
the Labyrinth (1996),
Dark
Cities Underground (1999;
Mythopeic
Fantasy Award nominee),
The
Alchemist’s Door (2002),
THE
UNCERTAIN PLACES (2011;
winner of Mythopeic Fantasy Award), Weighing
Shadows (2015), and earlier this year IVORY APPLES.
She also penned a pair of novels as Isabel Glass: Daughter
of Exile (2004)
and The
Divided Crown (2005).

Goldstein’s
many respected short stories have been collected in Daily
Voices (1989)
and
Travellers
in Magic (1994).
Her story “Paradise Is a Walled Garden” won the 2011 Sidewise
Award.

WORDNERDY enjoys Lisa Goldstein’s IVORY APPLES.

I did like the fantastical elements a lot; this is a strong entry into the mysterious magical book genre. A-/B+.

Ivory Apples sounds like a fantasy story, but kind of a scary one. Is that how you see it?

I see it as a fantasy novel with a lot of horror in it. I wanted to
write more horror than I usually do, but not let it completely take over
the narrative.
